The Electronic Radial Alignment Gauge (ERAG) or Concentricity Alignment Tool (CAT)
An ERAG or CAT is not exactly an item that people commonly know the use for. In a nutshell, it is used to measure the distance between two surfaces that are adjacent to each other. The ERAG ensures that the distance measured is accurate. There are an enormous amount of benefits and possibilities to using such equipment.
First of all, the use of tight wire or laser alignment is not necessary. The convenience of this makes the ERAG very easy to use. The advanced rotor accounts for the amount of diaphragm misalignment. The accuracy is outstanding with its resolution at .0001 inch, it can measure distances to a maximum plus/minus ratio of .0005 of an inch. This is because intense field testing and extensive expert developmental implementation has been ongoing since 1992.
The ERAG is extremely durable and can be used thousands of times, year after year without any maintenance. In fact, the requirement for any kind of maintenance or parts replacement is extremely rare. If in such a circumstance that it requires maintaining, parts are readily available at the factory. What's more, most maintenance can be done in the field.
Equipped with an LCD display, you can observe annular space variations in real-time as the CAT is pulled through the packing groove. This happens because the head of the CAT contains a lever that moves along the contour of the diaphragm ID. As it does this, it sends data of the dimensional variations to the display.
On the head of the main body of the instrument there is a pivotally coupled U frame. The arms of this part work in correspondence. They are pivoted in opposite directions and the arms are provided with contact points. The base underneath the U frame is spring loaded so that it can slide within the body of the instrument. The body of the instrument is connected to a transducer.
To accomplish alignment, you can directly measure the dimension of the rotor to seal carrier by having the rotor in place.
Considering how inexpensive the ERAG is, using the equipment in one outing, usually pays for itself. Using the ERAG is easy. It is also one of the best alignment methods to measure the distance between two adjacent surfaces with precision every time!
