Damian Josefsberg founded ACQUIP in Miami, in 2003. With more than a decade of experience in the field, we asked him to give us some insight on where he thinks the energy industry would be advancing next.
Q: In the constantly advancing world of energy technology – what do you think are the future trends in energy?
D: I believe that energy production will become smaller and more localized, since so much energy is wasted in distribution. I think that we will have clean, quiet, and efficient, gas turbine energy production at the neighborhood level. So, a significant amount of energy that a local community uses will be locally produced.
Q: What current developing field of energy do you find really interesting and why?
D: Energy Storage. If there is a cheap way to store large amounts of energy it is a game changer for the power generation industry. It would mean that inefficiencies in the market place, where there is peak demand and therefore higher rates, would be reduced because the energy will be able to be stored. When demand is lower, electricity is lower, and then energy could be dispersed during peak demand times. It would allow for large amounts of energy to be stored from alternative energy production and make it so that rural areas would have uninterrupted power supply, especially in the third world.
Q: Who do you think would benefit the best from this sort of advancement?
D: This would benefit the industrial user the best. Since they have to buy their energy in the open market, and are not protected by state-regulated energy rates. The energy storage would act to bring efficiency to the market place.
Q: With energy usage being at a higher demand every year, what steps can companies take to make their plant or factory more efficient?
D: Streamlining of processes to reduce unnecessary power output is a good example of improving efficiency. Also, performing proper predictive maintenance on your rotating equipment to include precision-alignment, will increase the efficiency of operating plant equipment.
Q: What are the steps to start a predictive maintenance program?
D: Predictive maintenance is a philosophy, an attitude that everyone in the maintenance department and up the chain of command has to buy into and be willing to spend the time and money, putting in place and maintaining. When a predictive maintenance plan is executed properly, maintenance costs are planned and there are few surprise outages. The best way to implement a successful predictive maintenance program is to determine which equipment will fall under the predictive maintenance program, and what tools will be used to perform the predictive maintenance. Then, everyone involved in performing maintenance, must be trained and re-trained regularly.
